Trains to Eltham travel along the Bexleyheath Line between Dartford and the London stations of Charing Cross, Cannon Street and Victoria. Although trains have been travelling this route since 1895, the current Eltham station was opened in 1985 alongside the new bus station that had been built above the A2. Passengers exit the station and, walking past the bus stops, come to Well Hall Road. From there, it is a five-minute stroll to Eltham High Street.
The crossroads between the bottom end of Well Hall Road and the High Street is the main shopping area in Eltham, with a number of pubs and restaurants. Also close by is the Bob Hope Theatre and the Eltham Palace and Gardens. There has been a palace on this site since the 1300s, but the current house was built in the 1930s and its Art Deco interior is regarded as one of the finest examples of modernist design in Britain.
