A quiet, unstaffed halt serving a small village, Dolau Railway Station lies on the Heart of Wales Line operated by Arriva Trains Wales. Trains to Dolau are relatively infrequent, with only four southbound trains towards Swansea and Cardiff Central and five northbound trains to Shrewsbury on weekdays. On Saturdays, four trains operate in each direction; on Sundays, this drops to two. For southbound trains, Dolau is a request stop only; northbound trains are obligated to stop due to the half-barrier at the level crossing.
As with most Heart of Wales Line stations, Dolau has been modernised with digital information screens, customer help points, payphones, and a bicycle rack for customer use. A waiting shelter and bench seating are present on the platform. The station is decorated with plants, flowers, and a guestbook courtesy of the Dolau Station Action Group. The station is home to a plaque awarded to it by Queen Elizabeth II during her Golden Jubilee visit to Wales in 2002.
