Denmark Hill is a busy station in the London Borough of Southwark, used for over five million journeys every year. It is less than five minutes’ walk from the King’s College and Maudsley hospitals and the Denmark Hill campus of King’s College London. It is also the nearest station for Camberwell, which is about eight minutes by bus from the station. Other nearby bus stops offer routes to and from East Dulwich, Lewisham, Herne Hill and Croydon.
Denmark Hill station first opened in 1865. The original Victorian Italianate architecture was renovated and restored following a fire in 1980 and Camberwell Society’s campaign to save the buildings. As part of the restoration, much of what had been the main booking hall was converted into a pub – The Phoenix. A major internal redesign was completed in 2013, including a new ticket office, walkways and lifts to all platforms.
