Cumbernauld train station is on the Cumbernauld Line, just fourteen miles from Glasgow, and much of its passenger traffic comes from local commuters travelling to the city. Its half-hourly service to Glasgow Queen Street has a journey time of about 30 minutes, and there are also frequent stopping services to Dalmuir, taking approximately an hour and twenty minutes. In the other direction, Falkirk Grahamston station, on the edge of the Firth of Forth, is just 15 minutes away.
Situated in a large residential and industrial area on the southeast edge of town, Cumbernauld's station is often criticised for its location - to reach the town's main indoor shopping centre is a walk of some 20 minutes, or a 15-minute bus ride. There are a handful of local shops and restaurants on South Carbrain Road, a few minutes walk away, but Cumbernauld's main strength is the surrounding countryside; just east of the station the town gives way to open fields.
