Bryn train station is located in Bryn in Greater Manchester, on the Liverpool to Wigan Line. It serves Bryn and the surrounding area, including the town of Ashton-in-Makerfield, with trains operated by Northern. Bryn station first opened in 1869. It is unstaffed and the two platforms are basic with only small shelters and seats for passengers; the station buildings which once stood have been demolished.
The areas around Bryn and Ashton-in-Makerfield have a history of coal mining which led to an excess of derelict land and spoil tips. These have since been reclaimed and transformed, including three large spoil tips near Bryn which were converted into a local nature reserve, the Three Sisters Recreation Area, now popular with local walkers and wildlife enthusiasts. The challenging Three Sisters Race Circuit also draws visitors to the area, with kart and motorcycle racing events and race instruction.
Trains from Bryn train stations depart every half an hour on Monday to Saturday daytimes, and hourly in the evenings and on Sundays. Popular destinations from the station are Wigan North Western, which is a 9 minute journey away, and Liverpool Lime Street, with a fastest journey time of 40 minutes.
