The station is on the Bristol to Weymouth line and is managed by Great Western Railway, which also operates some of the train services. Bruton Railway Cutting has an interesting geological history and has been declared a Site of Special Scientific Interest with links to the Middle Jurassic period. Another such site is found nearby, at the Godminster Lane Quarry and Railway Cutting, and a small museum in the town houses a display of items dating from this period up to the present day.
