Birkdale train station serves the suburb of Birkdale in Southport. Located on the Southport branch of Merseyrail’s Northern Line, the station sees regular Mersey trains every 15 minutes throughout the day, Monday to Saturday. Trains from Birkdale run northbound to Southport and southbound to Hunts Cross via Liverpool Central. During the summer, Sunday trains run on this schedule as well. In the winter, Sunday trains are half-hourly.

As with all Merseyrail stations, Birkdale is fully staffed during all opening hours and monitored via CCTV across the platforms. Station facilities include the booking office, departure and arrival screens, a carpark and cycle storage. Both platforms are step-free and can be accessed either via subway between the two or the level crossing. Birkdale’s disused signal box from 1905, still located adjacent to the station today, is a Grade II listed building and is the only remaining station on the Northern Line to have an extant signal box.
