Travellers to Barry Island exit the station opposite the Barry Island Pleasure Park, a historic amusement park next to Whitmore Bay. It's a fitting way to arrive – the station was opened specifically to serve the park, and the two opened in tandem in 1896. Today, services continue to link Barry Island with Cardiff Central, Aberdare and Merthyr Tydfil. The Barry Island Tourist Railway, a heritage line between Barry Island and Barry Docks, also operates out of the station. The walk from Barry Island station to the promenade and beach at Whitmore Bay takes about five minutes, passing the Pleasure Park on the way. A little further to the east of the station is the beach at Jackson's Bay, where you'll find the Barry Yacht Club. Most of the attractions of Barry Island are to the south of the station, facing the Bristol Channel, with the area north of the railway predominantly residential.
