Transport connections between London and Cambridge have long been important to Baldock, where there has been a settlement since prehistoric times. Many old coaching houses are still operating as pubs in the town, and the arrival of the railway in 1850 set it on the path to becoming the popular base for commuters it is today. Regular services to Baldock station travel between London King's Cross and Cambridge, with fast connections to the capital taking only thirty minutes.
The station is to the north of the town centre, just a short walk from the shops and pubs of the High Street. Look out for a supermarket in a large, listed Art Deco building - it originally housed a film processing factory. Baldock has a long history as a market town, and stalls still set up in the town centre every Wednesday, with a monthly craft and farmers' market between March and October.
