68 miles southeast of London Victoria, Aylesham train station lies on the Dover branch of the Chatham Main Line between Adisham and Snowdown. Initially opened by Southern Railway to serve the needs of increasing passenger traffic related to the Kent coalfield in the 1920s, the station's two platforms today see increasing passenger traffic for greater Kent and London. Typical off-peak service sees one train per hour depart Aylesham in each direction. Northbound trains to London Victoria via Chatham and Bromley South depart from platform 1, and southbound trains to Dover Priory depart from platform 2.

Monday through Saturday, the station booking office is manned, and there's a Permit to Travel machine located on the London-bound platform. Step-free access is available to platform 1 for London-bound trains, but no access is available for platform 2. Passengers may use the waiting room off platform 1 or the shelter on platform 2 whilst waiting.
