Located in the heart of East Ayrshire south of Glasgow, Auchinleck Railway Station serves the surrounding town of Auchinleck and nearby Cumnock. Auchinleck Station was first opened in 1848 as a calling point for the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock and Ayr Railway, changing hands several times in following years. After being closed for some time, no permanent structures remain at the station, although waiting shelters and digital information screens are available for passenger use on each platform.
Today the station sees trains to Auchinleck with relative frequency, including nine northbound trains to Glasgow and nine southbound to Carlisle every weekday. Additional services include extended southbound trains that continue to Newcastle, and an evening train that terminates at Dumfries. On Sundays, trains between Carlisle and Glasgow call at Auchinleck twice a day in each direction. Smartcard validators are available, but passengers wishing to purchase a ticket should do so onboard or before commencing travel, as the station does not have ticket machines. (160 words)
