From 1862 until 1956, trains to Armadale stopped at the station to the south of the West Lothian town. After over half a century without any services, the station reopened in 2011 as part of the new Airdrie-Bathgate rail link between Edinburgh and Glasgow. Today trains depart Armadale for Helensburgh via Glasgow Queen Street and Airdrie, and for Edinburgh Waverley via Bathgate and Livingston North. Armadale is the closest station to the town of Whitburn, which lies a mile and a half to the south. The station is about a mile south of Armadale town centre and the shops, pubs and restaurants of Main Street. Regular buses ferry arrivals to Main Street in about ten minutes, otherwise it is a fifteen-minute walk. The far side of Armadale is the Edinburgh Monarchs speedway team’s stadium. Since moving to the town in 1997, the Edinburgh Monarchs have won a number of Premier League championships.
