Aberdare train station is the final station on the Aberdare branch of the Merthyr Line, connecting Valley towns with Cardiff and Barry Island. The fastest service to Cardiff Central takes just 60 minutes. Other popular destinations include Pontypridd at less than 30 minutes, and Barry Island which takes 1 hour and 33 minutes.

The original Aberdare train station, known as Aberdare High Level, was opened at this location in 1851 to serve the Vale of Neath Line. The current passenger service through Abercynon and Cardiff terminated at Aberdare Low Level and was not available from this station until 1988. An original red brick station building is still visible from the station platform and has recently been redeveloped as part of the new Coleg y Cymoedd Aberdare campus.

The shops, market and cafes of Aberdare town centre are a short walk from the station and the nearby bus station and taxi rank provide transport links to the rest of the area. There is a small shelter on the single platform, and a ticket office which is staffed part-time. Tickets can also be collected from the self-service machine or purchased on the train. Trains from Aberdare run half-hourly to Cardiff and Barry Island on weekdays and hourly in the evenings. Sunday trains arrive every two hours.
