Abbey Wood is on the North Kent Line, with regular services taking local commuters to London Cannon Street and Charing Cross, as well as east towards Barnehurst, Dartford and Gillingham. It's the closest station to the residential developments of Thamesmead, and a regular bus service from Harrow Manorway, just outside the station, links the two. The station opened in 1849, and its most famous customer is Arts and Crafts pioneer William Morris, who used it after moving to nearby Bexleyheath in the 1860s. The original Abbey Wood village was located a few hundred metres to the south of where the station currently stands, and this is still the main shopping area of the neighbourhood. One place of interest nearby is the ruins of Lesnes Abbey, whose surrounding park and woods have been designated a local nature reserve. It's a ten-minute walk from the station via Wilton Road and Abbey Road.
