The Mid-Suffolk Light Railway (MSLR) – or 'Middy' as it's affectionately known – is Suffolk's only standard gauge heritage railway, based out of the former Brockford and Wetheringsett railway station in the Suffolk countryside. There you'll find the MSLR Museum, real ale bar, tea room and shop, and of course the chance to ride a classic steam train.

While MSLR is rather remote, it's by no means impossible to reach by public transport. First, catch a Greater Anglia train to Ipswich station. Ipswich is served by regular trains from London Liverpool Street, Cambridge, and Norwich. Next, hop on the 115 bus from outside the station towards Mendlesham. Hop off the bus at the Hall Lane stop – the bus journey should take just over an hour.

More about the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway

The MSLR almost fell into complete disrepair in the second half of the twentieth century, after the line closed in 1952. A group of volunteers came together in 1990 to set about preserving the railway and today it stands as a wonderful testament to their work. The MSLR is based at the former Brockford and Wetheringsett station, where you'll find an impressive collection of rolling stock (both steam and diesel), a museum, tea room and a fully-functioning Bar Carriage serving real ales. And on days where trains are running, you can ride a steam train along the railway as passengers would have done all those years ago!
