Did you know that you can travel for free on regional Cercanías trains, Rodalies and FEVE transport, as well as Alicante Trams with a train ticket for AVE trains or other long-distance services from Renfe?

This means that in many cities, you can get to the train station where your journey starts or to another location when you’ve reached your destination completely free of charge. This type of combined ticket is available on regional Cercanías services in many cities in the following regions: Galicia, Asturias, Catalonia, the Madrid region (officially the Community of Madrid), the Valencia region (officially the Community of Valencia), the Murcia region, Andalucia, the Basque Country and Castilla y León.

If you want to know more about the combined Cercanías and long-distance train tickets, continue reading for more details.

Free Cercanías train tickets with your AVE or iryo ticket

When you buy an AVE or iryo train ticket, you can enjoy a Cercanías or Rodalies ticket totally free (also Alicante TRAM only with AVE). Thanks to this, you can hop on a regional train to transfer to the station your long-distance train departs from at no extra cost. Or you can travel onward for free from your destination station to another place, like your accommodation, using these train networks.

Renfe Combinado Cercanías ticket

The combined Cercanías ticket (Combinado Cercanías in Spanish) is included free of charge with tickets for long-distance trains run by Renfe, including AVE trains.

This service is available for 4 hours before your train is scheduled to depart and 4 hours after your train arrives at its destination city. For the Alicante TRAM network, it’s available for 4 hours before and after your journey.

Also available with iryo

Just like when you purchase an AVE train ticket, if you buy an iryo train ticket you can also get a Combinado Cercanías ticket. Why not make the most of it and travel for free on short-distance trains when you arrive at your destination?

Free services

With the Combinado Cercanías fare, you can use the following 4 metropolitan or regional train networks. For the Alicante TRAM network, the combined ticket is valid on line 1 (to Benidorm), line 2 (to San Vicent del Raspeig), line 3 (to El Campello) and line 4 (to Plaza La Coruña).

How to get a Combinado Cercanías ticket

Not sure how to get your free Combinado Cercanías ticket? We've got you covered!

To use Cercanías services, scan the QR code on the PDF ticket from the Trainline app. QR code readers are available at the following stations:

  • Madrid
  • Barcelona
  • Málaga
  • San Sebastian
  • Zaragoza
  • Seville
  • Valencia

At other stations, you still need to manually enter the QR code on your ticket to get your Combinado Cercanías ticket printed. It’s easy to do: simply input the 5-digit code on your ticket into a ticket machine on the Cercanías train station platform. You can also redeem your combined ticket at a ticket office.

If it’s not possible to do either of these (because the station doesn’t have a ticket machine, for example), you can get on a Cercanías or TRAM service and validate the ticket by speaking to a member of staff onboard or at the station when you arrive at your destination.
