The ancient market town of Bury straddles the River Irwell, on the edge of the western Pennines in Greater Manchester. The rich industrial foundations of the town are still alive and well today, with several mills factories and workshops scattered around the area. Modern Bury on the other hand is famous for its sprawling shopping streets and open-air markets, all of which, and more, can be found within the ring road which encircles the vibrant town centre.

Make your way towards Bury Market, just a five-minute walk from the town's historic station. The market, which dates back over five hundred years, is home to everything from the exotic to the essential, and a brief stroll will make it clear why its been voted Britain's Best Market a record five times. There's another world of shops to get lost in right next to the market, too, in the shape of the Mill Gate Shopping Centre, with a more modern array of shops from HMV to Ernest Jones.

If shopping is not your bag, head over to the junction of Moss Street and Back Knowsley Street where you'll find The Bury Cultural Archives, The Fusilier Museum and internationally recognised Bury Art Museum with its stunning contemporary arts programmes.

With your cultural appetite suitably sated, it's surely time to wet your whistle. And if there's one thing Bury does well, it's brewing. The town is home to two of the finest microbreweries in the north-west - The Silver Street Brewing Company in The Clarence, one of the town centre's liveliest pubs, and the Irwell Works Brewery is tucked away on Irwell Street. Both have award-winning craft beers that must be tasted to be believed!
