Henry VIII destroyed Whitby Abbey as part of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Falling into ruin, it remained a prominent landmark, and in the late 19th century it inspired Bram Stoker to pen one of Dracula's most memorable scenes, where the storm-lashed schooner Dmitri runs aground on the East Cliff, and a monstrous hellhound bounds up into the graveyard, and vanishes.
