One of the best-loved areas of countryside in Britain, the New Forest is a historical, ecological and agricultural gem, boasting heathland, grassland, bogland and coppice all in one 219 square mile space. The wildlife alone is worth the trip: ponies, cattle, boars and donkeys roam the Forest freely. The New Forest started life in around 1079, and was founded as a royal hunting ground for William the Conqueror. William and his royal friends would head out amongst the trees to hunt deer, but it was during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries that the woodland really grew to prominence as a key supplier of timber for naval shipbuilding for the Crown. Today the New Forest is an endlessly picturesque National Park, and there are numerous ways for visitors to explore it.

It's particularly popular with cyclists, horse riders, ramblers, with hundreds of miles of waymarked trails and bridleways. Watersports fans can enjoy it too, thanks to several rivers and lakes and a coastline that reaches into the sailing hotspot of Southampton Water and the Solent in the east. Add in pretty little villages and great family attractions such as Peppa Pig World and Beaulieu's famous motor museum, and you have the perfect rail break...
