It can be something of a wrench for football fans to leave their historic home, as it was for Arsenal fans when they moved in 2006 from Highbury a few hundred metres down the road. But the Emirates Stadium – known as Ashburton Grove before the sponsorship agreement – is a worthwhile successor to the old stadium, and a physical representation of the development of the football club under two decades of Arsene Wenger as manager.
As well as hosting domestic games in the Premier League and the FA Cup, Arsenal regularly qualify for the UEFA Champions League, the highest level of club football in Europe. It should be noted that unless you are a member of Arsenal, it can be extremely difficult to get match tickets for home games at the Emirates. The average attendance at the stadium has been close to capacity in recent years.
An alternative way of visiting the stadium is through the official tours. There are guided and self-guided options available and include access to the Arsenal Museum, which is packed with memorabilia from the club’s long history. Around the stadium, there is also a series of murals and statues tied to the history and depicting the legends of the club.
