About Dover Castle

Perched on top of the White Cliffs of Dover, Dover Castle is the largest fortress in England and has been described as The Key to England due to its strategic importance, commanding, as it does, the most natural invasion route for England's would-be conquerors.

While a fortification has stood on the site since at least Saxon times, it was William the Conqueror and Henry II who created today's high medieval castle, with one of the last rectangular keeps ever built, at its heart. The castle still played a strategic role well into the 18th century with the addition of vast defenses to guard against Napoleonic invasion. And in 1940, the tunnels beneath the castle housed a military hospital and command centre, from where Operation Dynamo, the evacuation of British and Allied troops from Dunkirk, was coordinated.

Visitors can enjoy every chapter of Dover Castle's long and dramatic history, from its Roman lighthouse and Saxon ruins to living recreations of its medieval feasting halls and kitchens, and vivid depictions of the roles it played in WW2.  Enjoy the clash of steel of the outdoor medieval re-enactments, the deafening roar of a WW1 gun battery, and tours, events and special screenings while looking out over the English Channel.
