More about Chester Zoo

Since its tender 1930s beginnings, Chester Zoo has lead the way in forward-thinking wildlife attractions, changing the way animals are looked after in zoos the world over. From the first polar bear wandering, bar free, through the park to the zoo’s continually evolving enclosures and islands, visitors have always felt the spirit of adventure when they arrive at the zoo. Set in 125 acres of award-winning gardens and home to 12,500 animals and 400 species, it is the largest zoo in Britain, and it has some of the biggest ideas.

An experience opened in 2015 is the Islands at Chester Zoo, a recreation of the tropical environments of six south-east Asian islands, where explorers of all ages can track the famed Sumatran tiger and climb trees with orangutans in Europe’s largest orangutan enclosure before enjoying a relaxing riverboat trip weaving a path through all six islands. As the zoo has both the welfare of their rare and exotic animals as well as the education of every visitor at its heart, there are also daily animal lectures and hands-on experiences to enjoy before heading off to the play areas, themed gardens, numerous restaurants and the awesome Zoofari monorail.
