The first thing to do on arriving at Apsley House is grab an English Heritage multimedia guide and set off on a stroll to learn about the house's rich history as you walk. Be sure to take a look in the basement at the 2015-opened exhibition of never-before-seen medals, shields and memorabilia.

Apsley House is, of course, the former home of Arthur Wellesley, the 1st Duke of Wellington - or the Iron Duke as he is more famously known - and victor at the Battle of Waterloo. Apsley House contains countless displays and artefacts about the duke, allowing visitors to learn more about the man behind the myth and one of the greatest defensive commanders of all time.

As you make your way through the glittering interiors of the house's many rooms, you get a glimpse at how the other half live. Look around at the beautiful gilded architecture and stunning artworks displayed throughout the main halls - there's even an opportunity to see the gifts that were lavished on the duke by emperors, tsars and kings. With over three-thousand pieces, including fine art, sculptures and ornaments cast from silver and crafted from porcelain, there's more than enough to catch the eye.
