Newtown station - or Y Drenewydd in Welsh - in Powys, Wales, sits on the Cambrian line from Shrewsbury to Aberystwyth and mostly serves Birmingham International. Opened in 1861, the two-platform station was one of the last major Cambrian stations to be erected. A power house in the more modern chapters of Welsh history, Newtown prospered in the 18th and 19th centuries through the textile and flannel industry, aided first by the construction of the Montgomeryshire Canal and, later, the railway. Today, the town is a shoppers' haven, however, with Bear Lanes, the town's main commercial hub, a major draw and just ten minutes' walk from the station. Other highlights include The Robert Owen Museum, celebrating the town's most famous son, a social reformer and a founder of utopian socialism; the Oriel Davies Gallery, a key gallery of Wales; and the Pryce Jones Royal Welsh Warehouse, which at one time housed the world's first mail order service depot.

Station details & facilities

Newtown station's passengers mainly use the three entrances from Ffordd Croesawdy which lead on to platform 1, with ramp access available on the left. The ticket hall is in the middle of the platform and has only one ticket kiosk with intermittent opening times. The other platform is accessed via a footbridge and a further entrance off Brimmon Lane. There is a help point and various benches on platform 2, but no toilets.
