The National Portrait Gallery is closed until 2023 as part of the Inspiring People redevelopment project.

Travelling by train to the National Portrait Gallery is super-simple. The nearest railway station to the National Portrait Gallery is London Charing Cross, which is served by Southeastern services throughout the day. It's just 5 minutes to the National Portrait Gallery on foot. Leaving the station you'll be standing on The Strand. Cross the road to Duncannon Street, go left, and take the first right. The gallery is just up the road on the left-hand side.

The National Portrait Gallery is also between three tube stations, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, and Charring Cross so you've plenty of public transport options if you're already in London exploring the city.

The National Portrait Gallery is full of wonders for all to enjoy. You'll find it jam-packed with a fascinating historic collection of portraits of significantly important and famous British people. When it first opened it in 1856 was the first portrait gallery in the world.

Visit the National Portrait Gallery website for opening information.

Whilst the current government advice is to only travel if your journey is essential, we will update this page as the situation changes. We will always provide official information on how to visit this attraction safely and responsibly by train.
