About Kenilworth Castle

Kenilworth Castle was founded as a Norman tower in the 1120s, strengthened by King John in the 13th century into a forbidding fortress with large water defences, and developed by John of Gaunt in the 14th century into a blend of fortress and palace. Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, then added Tudor buildings to produce an opulent Renaissance palace. The result of centuries of work is "the finest surviving example of a semi-royal palace of the later middle ages, significant for its scale, form and quality of workmanship, Anthony Emery The castle has been described," according to historian Anthony Emery.

Walk the castle and be whisked away to the pageants, extravagant banquets, fireworks, bear-baiting and mystery plays that nearly bankrupted Dudley, Earl of Leicester when he lavished them on Queen Elizabeth I during her visit in 1575. Climb the tower Leicester built to impress Elizabeth, and enjoy the spectacular views from her apartments. See the mighty Norman keep, John of Gaunt’s Great Hall, and the beautifully restored Elizabethan garden.

Kenilworth Castle was partially destroyed by Parliamentarian forces in the English Civil War to prevent any further military use, and so it stands today, a mix of habitable buildings and majestic ruins.
