About Chester Roman Amphitheatre

It’s taken nearly a hundred years for excavations at Chester Roman Amphitheatre to get where they are today, but now, when you look at the site from Little St John Street, you immediately get a sense of the size and importance of this 1st-century amphitheatre, thanks, in part, to the detailed Gary Drostle mural that stretches across the amphitheatre, under a raised walkway.

The perfect spot to sit and enjoy the mural, weather permitting, is on the Little St John Street grass area in front of the amphitheatre’s ancient ruins. It’s also a great place in Chester town centre to take some time out to catch some rays, pitch up for a picnic or simply sit and watch the world go by.

A walk along the routes the Roman troops – even gladiators – took on their way through the amphitheatre will open up the rich history seen under the site’s vaulted stairways and deadly gladiator pit. Historians believe, thanks to the finding of pots decorated with images of gladiators, that the amphitheatre was the birthplace of souvenirs, but these days, it’s a short jaunt along Pepper Street to pick up amphitheatre memorabilia and a snack.
