About Carisbrooke Castle

Start your visit to Carisbrooke Castle, the only UK museum founded by a member of the Royal Family, with a trip to the 16th-century guardhouse and its collection of displays and exhibits that chart the castle’s long and chequered history – including an engaging film and virtual tour.

Then, head for the bowling green and play on the very same lawn where King Charles I once stood. Continue to retrace his steps with a venture into the castle and wander through the rooms in which he plotted his attempted escape.

Next up climb the steps up the castle mound and feast your eyes on the awe-inspiring views from the top of the ancient keep. Take a stroll right round the castle walls and get a birds-eye views of the best scenery the Isle of Wight has to offer, in all directions. And whatever you do, don’t leave the keep without trying on some traditional medieval armour and firing a mini-cannon in the direction of the keep house.

Finally, once you’ve well and truly worked up an appetite, make your way to the Castle Tearoom in the beautiful surroundings of the castle’s former carriage room.
