Chesterfield has 12 passenger trains an hour running in all directions but London. The quickest way from the station to the castle is by 15-minute taxi ride, which can be arranged from outside the station, but taking the 45-minute bus ride is also an option, leaving from Stephenson Place, five minutes’ walk from the station.

About Bolsover Castle

Built initially by the Peverels in the 12th century, Bolsover Castle became an extravagant retreat in the 17th century when playboy, poet and courtier, Sir William Cavendish added the jewel to Bolsover’s crown.

The Little Castle with its turrets and towers is definitely the first place you should head on arrival. Take a wander through its labyrinth of gargantuan rooms, all filled with wonderful art, marble features and stunning painted ceilings designed to wow the visitor. The best part of all? There are no roped off areas or ‘please do not touch’ signs anywhere in the castle, and all of the furniture and features are yours to be experienced and enjoyed.

Next on the agenda is the weaving wall walk around the edge of the castle walls and enjoy the Derbyshire countryside reaching out around the castle, just as the Peverels and Cavendishes would surely have done hundreds of years before. From up there, you’ll also get a bird’s eye view of the beautiful gardens below, which should be your next stop. The centrepiece of the gardens is an ornate statue of Venus, which sits proudly in amongst the carpet-like lawns and vibrant flowers that punctuate the sprawling grounds.
