Trains to London Charing Cross

London Charing Cross station, situated on the Strand right next to the River Thames, is the sixth busiest station in Britain, seeing over 40 million passenger journeys each year. But it has a relatively low number of platforms for such a well-used station - only six, compared to Euston's 18 or Waterloo's 22. Part of the reason for Charing Cross's relatively compact layout is its location: when the station was built in 1864, it took over the narrow site of Hungerford Market, which dated back to 1682. Entering from the Strand side, you'll pass underneath the Renaissance-style Charing Cross Hotel, which opened a year after the station but needed extensive repairs after bombing during the Second World War. And if you're arriving at Charing Cross, you'll find yourself in the heart of London, with Trafalgar Square, the National Gallery, the South Bank and Covent Garden virtually on your doorstep, and Buckingham Palace a short walk away down The Mall.
