Now the colourful Mediterranean island has been thrust back into the limelight after recently winning the coveted accolade of Italy’s Capital of Culture for 2022, fending off competition from nine other candidates. It is the first time that the title has ever been granted to an island.

The proclamation took place during a press conference, announced by the Italian Minister of Culture and Tourism, Dario Franceschini. Procida thus beat the competition from Ancona, Bari, Cerveteri, L'Aquila, Pieve di Soligo, Taranto, Trapani, Verbania and Volterra.

The mayor of Procida described his island as a community that is proud and enthusiastic about its territory. Procida has bet on the culture of heritage for its development.

The perfect spot to visit in summer 2022 to get a taste of what Italian culture really means!

And now that you know how to get to the island, let's see the events’ calendar together.

Procida capital of culture: the events

The opening ceremony took place on April 9 and was inspired by sea myths.

For 300 days, Procida will host artists from 45 different countries (a total of 350 musicians, theatre directors and others), until the final ceremony on December 22.

The events will revolve around social ties, co-creation, eco-sustainability and inclusion (the calendar is constantly changing).

If you plan to visit Procida this summer, you will find musicians from all over the world on the island, but you can also join meetings and open discussions on topical issues. From May 27 till December, you will also be able to visit a permanent exhibition of contemporary art installed in the former prison of Palazzo d'Avalos.

Procida includes, teaches, learns, inspires, invents and innovates. In addition to the many events, you can get lost in the magnificent landscape that will make you fall in love as soon as you set foot on the islands. Marina Grande and its colours will steal your heart, the pastel-coloured houses will make you feel like you are in a fairy tale and the beach of Chiaia will leave you speechless. If you are a cinephile, go to the village of Marina della Corrincella where "Il Postino" (The Postman) by Troisi was filmed in 1994; if you like animals, keep in mind that Vivara is a marine protected area where you can admire dolphins and whales!
