Traveling from Paris to Marseille with TGV INOUI

My journey from Paris to Marseille begins with the Metro. Gare de Lyon station is served by a large public transport network, and I decided to travel via line 14 of the Metro. You can also take line 1, or the RER A and D. Once I arrived, it took me a few moments to get my bearings and find the exit, because the signs were a bit confusing.

Departure from Gare de Lyon

As travelers can show up two minutes before boarding, I arrived at Paris Gare de Lyon a few minutes before the departure of my TGV train to Marseille. I arrived in Hall 1 and the noticeboard located just above the Brioche Dorée told me where to go: Hall 2. To get to my departure hall, I walked along a long corridor. In Hall 1, there are waiting areas, paid toilets, cafes and a pharmacy.

Usually, I would advise validating your train ticket before boarding. But as I bought an e-ticket, I was able to go straight onto the train and find my reserved seat. Every train ticket mentions a car number and a seat number. I found the number of my car on the doors of the TGV, which can have up to 16 cars depending on the number of people who have reserved. As for my seat, I found the number above the seats.

On board the TGV train from Paris to Marseille

This particular TGV INOUI train was a double-decker. Staff will direct you according to your seat number to either the ground floor or the 1st floor. Regarding your baggage, there will be a dedicated space at the beginning, middle and end of the car. I would recommend leaving large baggage in these spaces and storing hand baggage on the shelf located above your seat.

Whether you’re in First or Second Class, the seats are comfortable. They are equipped with a foldable table and a net (practical for storing your train ticket, magazine or newspaper). You will also find a footrest and a trash can, located on the side of the car. Staff pass through the aisles regularly, so you can ask any questions that come to mind. And for avid readers like me, there are reading lights just above the seats, in case you're missing a little light.

Whether you are traveling by TGV INOUI or OUIGO, look out the window. The countryside landscape unfolds right before your eyes. It transforms into vineyards as you descend into the south of France. The TGV train serves the stations of Avignon TGV, Aix-en-Provence TGV and finally Marseille Saint-Charles. Pay particular attention when arriving in Avignon, the view is exceptional!

I was very happy to see that this TGV INOUI service had free WiFi available. To take advantage of the WiFi, connect to the _SNCF_WIFI_INOUI network and log in to the portal using the 6 letters from your booking confirmation and your name. This portal is very informative because, once registered, a map of France is displayed and tells you where the train is and at what speed it is traveling. You can also peruse the menu of the TGV Bar, generally found in cars 4 and 14. This bar offers menus from great French chefs, as well as sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

Arrival in Marseille

My trip ended at Marseille Saint-Charles station, located on the hills of the Phocaean city, a few minutes from the old port and the Mediterranean Sea. If you are heading elsewhere, the station is served by various train companies:

  • TGV INOUI, Intercités or TER trains to other French cities.
  • OUIGO trains to Marne-la-Vallée-Chessy.
  • TGV Lyria trains to Switzerland.
  • Frecciarossa trains to Italy.

If you decide to go directly to the Old Port of Marseille via the famous Rue de la Canebière, go down the large stairs towards the city center and remember to stop there to admire a breathtaking view of Marseille! You should even be able to observe the Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica or “The Good Mother” as the people of Marseille like to call it.
