How much luggage can I take on the train?

You can take up to 3 pieces of luggage free of charge on trains within the UK. This includes 2 large items (suitcase, rucksack etc.) and one smaller item of hand luggage (handbag, briefcase etc.) Luggage should be stored in the overhead luggage racks, under the seats and in the luggage compartments throughout the train.

On some longer distance trains, it may be possible to store luggage in a separate area of the train. Speak to the staff on the platform or on the train before boarding and they will assist you with this. Please be aware this will mean you will be separated from your luggage, so make sure it’s locked.

Prams/ pushchairs may be carried on trains, but the must be capable of folding if required.

Sporting equipment can only be taken on board at the discretion of the TOC you are traveling with.

You can take luggage including, laptops, rucksacks, trolley bags or suitcases on Deutsche Bahn trains free of charge. There is no official size or weight restrictions, however luggage must not be so big or heavy that it cannot be handled by a single person.

Luggage should be stored in overhead luggage racks, under the seats or in one of the luggage compartments located near the doors or in the middle of the carriage.

You may also take prams/ pushchairs and sports equipment (e.g. skis and surfboards) on board.

Luggage allowances for Eurostar trains are determined by ticket type -

 
If you are travelling with an Adult ticket -
  • 2 pieces of luggage
  • 1 small piece of hand luggage
 
If you are travelling with a Child ticket -
  • 1 pieces of luggage
  • 1 small piece of hand luggage
There is no luggage allowance for children under 4 who are travelling for free.
 
 
If you are travelling with a Business Premier ticket -
  • 3 pieces of luggage
  • 1 small piece of hand luggage
 
Luggage must be no longer than 85cm at it’s widest part, there is no weight limit, however you must be able to lift it safely by yourself.
 
Prams/ pushchairs travel for free and in addition to your luggage allowance, they will need to be folded and stored in the luggage rack above your seat.
 
The following sporting equipment can be carried on Eurostar trains -
 
  • Golf Bags up to the size of 20 x 35 x 35cm can be taken as part of you luggage allowance.
  • Skis and Snowboards can be taken on direct trains to Bourg-St-Maurice, Lyon, Avignon and Marseille in addition to your luggage allowance. They must be in a protective case and can be stored in the additional allocated space. For all other trains, skis will form part of your normal luggage allowance.

Luggage on Italo trains can be stored in the luggage rack and glove compartments located throughout the train. In Smart ambience coaches, luggage must be no greater than 75x53x30 cm.

Comfort and Prima ambience coaches also feature some storage lockers, no luggage size restrictions apply when travelling in Comfort, Prima or Club Executive.

Prams/ pushchairs travel for free, they will need to be folded.

You can take luggage on board NS trains as long as it does not exceed 85cm in height width or depth.

Prams and sporting equipment are allowed, as long as they do not exceed the restrictions. Prams will need to be folded.

You can take the following luggage on Ouigo trains –

  • 1 piece of luggage with dimension not exceeding 55 x 35 x 25cm that'll fit under your seat
  • 1 small handbag with dimension not exceeding 36 x 27 x 15cm

You bring a prams/ pushchair for free if you are travelling with a young child. It must to be folded before boarding and stored in the luggage racks.

Any additional luggage not booked before travel will be charged a fee of 20€ per item on board.

  • No single piece of luggage exceeds 85 x 55 x 35cm or
  • The total length of all the luggage does not exceed 290cm.
  • The total weight must not exceed 25kg.

 

The following sporting equipment may be included as part of your luggage allowance –

  • Skis
  • Golf bags
  • Surfboards not exceeding 120 x 90 cm.

A visible label with the passenger’s name should be attached to all luggage.

 

Prams/ pushchairs travel for free, they will need to be folded.

  • No single piece of luggage exceeds 85 x 55 x 35cm or
  • The total length of all the luggage does not exceed 290cm.
  • The total weight must not exceed 25kg.

All luggage must be labeled with the passengers details.

 

The following sporting equipment may be included as part of your luggage allowance –

  • Skis
  • Golf bags
  • Surfboards not exceeding 120 x 90 cm.

A visible label with the passenger’s name should be attached to all luggage.

 

Prams/ pushchairs travel for free, they will need to be folded.

You can take up to 2 pieces of luggage with dimension not exceeding 77 x 53x 90cm, plus 1 small piece of hand luggage on Thalys trains. There is no weight limit, but you must be able to carry it yourself.

Prams/ pushchairs travel for free, in addition to your luggage allowance, they will need to be folded before boarding and stored in the luggage racks.

You can take 2 pieces of luggage with dimensions not exceeding 160cm in height, length or width and one small piece of hand luggage on board Thello trains.

You can take an additional piece of luggage, subject to availability for a fee of 40€, payable on board.

Trenitalia has no official luggage allowance on their trains. As general rule you should be able to handle any luggage by yourself and you must be able to store it safely in the luggage areas throughout the train.
