Where was Mary & George filmed? 

Like so many period pieces, Mary & George was filmed throughout the UK, and many locations are in or within a train ride from London. 

Hatfield House, England 

Closest station: Hatfield 

As one of the many Hertfordshire filming locations for Mary & George, Hatfield House took on a regal role of hosting the King’s banquet. 

Rothamsted Manor, England 

Closest station: Harpenden 

A lovely venue outside of Harpenden, Rothamsted Manor doubled as Compton Manor. 

Grimsthorpe Castle, England 

Closest station: Grantham 

The first of a few castles on this list, Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire donned a French accent when it became a chateau for George’s visit to France.  

St Bartholomew-the-Great, England 

Closest station: Barbican (London Underground)  

This church, built as a priory in 1123, was used for the royal coronation and parliament scenes.

Old Hunstanton Beach, England 

Closest station: King’s Lynn 

Norfolk has some of the best beaches in Britain, and Old Hunstanton Beach is no stranger to film crews shooting royal scenes. The Princess Diana historical psychological drama, Spencer, was also filmed in the area. 

Stirling Castle, Scotland 

Closest station: Stirling 

One of the best castles in all of Europe, Stirling Castle set the stage for a banquet scene in Mary & George. Its exterior also cosplayed as one of our favorite UK cities: Edinburgh

Ashridge Estate, England 

Closest station: Tring 

The gorgeous Ashridge Estate’s acreage was used for Mary & George’s hunting scenes. The estate is owned by the National Trust and is available to tour.

A wonderful day trip from London, Dover Castle gets the distinguished honor of portraying the Tower of London in Mary & George

Knole, England 

Closest station: Sevenoaks 

Knole is another stunning National Trust gem showcased in the series, standing in for the interior shots of James’ palace. 

Hampden House, England 

Closest station: Princes Risborough 

This Grade II listed house is not only a popular wedding venue but also frequently used as a filming location for period dramas. In Mary & George, Hampden House stands in for the Privy Council Chamber and the legal chambers of Sir Edward Coke.

Crowhurst Place, England 

Closest station: Lingfield 

Out in the rural area of Surrey, Crowhurst Place is a Grade I listed medieval hall house. In Mary & George, this manor stands in as Mary Villiers’ home. It’s a real private home, so be kind enough not to trespass. 

Ham House and Garden, England 

Closest station: St Margarets 

Whereas some of the real-life locations weren’t practical for filming, the original London residence of George Villers is nonexistent today. Ham House stood in as a substitute. 

The Charterhouse, England 

Closest station: Barbican (London Underground) 

The Charterhouse in London is open to tour, should you want to see where production faked a handful of locales, including London Palace, the King’s Banquet Hall, and the London Meat Market.

Mary & George made its debut on Sky Atlantic in the UK in March 2024, then in the United States a month later via Starz. If you can’t stream it for whatever reason, you can read the book that inspired it: The King’s Assassin: The Fatal Affair of George Villiers and James I by Benjamin Woolley.
