Traveling from Naples to Bologna with Italo

Last December, I took the train from Naples to Bologna with my sister to meet some friends and explore the city together.

Buying my train ticket

For our train journey from Naples to Bologna, we bought an Economy ticket to travel in Italo’s Smart Class.

As the Christmas holidays were approaching, we decided to buy our tickets a couple of weeks in advance to save money. We booked digital tickets so we could easily store them on our phones and avoid standing in line at the station.

Getting to Napoli Centrale station and boarding my train

Several bus services can take you from different areas in the Campania region to Napoli Centrale station. We took a bus from Avellino and stopped at Metropark Napoli Centrale bus station, which is only a few minutes away from the railway station – you just need to follow the 'train station' sign (Stazione ferroviaria in Italian) and you’ll be there in no time.

Once we got to the station, finding our train was pretty easy. We simply followed the ‘high-speed trains’ sign (treni alta velocità in Italian) and showed our tickets to a member of staff to get through the ticket gates.

View of Italian mountains from window on Italo train

The train journey from Naples to Bologna

The train journey itself was quite pleasant. There was plenty of legroom and our leather reclining seats were spacious and comfortable, allowing us to sit back and enjoy the scenic views of the Italian countryside along the way.

The WiFi offered on board was very good too – we managed to stay connected with no major issues throughout the whole journey. Power outlets were also available at our seats, which was convenient for me as my phone had run out of battery.

Plug sockets on Italo train

As we were traveling in Italo’s Smart Class, a meal was not included in our ticket price. However, vending machines were available in car 7 – we were seated in car 6 so getting a snack and drink was pretty quick.

Arriving at Bologna Centrale station

As soon as we arrived at Bologna Centrale station, I sent a message to my friends as they had already arrived at the station and were waiting for us. After that, we simply followed the signs to the exit and started to explore the city right away. We had a nice walk in Parco della Montagnola – it’s the oldest park in Bologna! – then headed towards Mercato di Mezzo (or Middle Market) to get some delicious tortellini al ragù.

In conclusion, we really enjoyed traveling from Naples to Bologna in Italo Smart Class. If you're planning to travel between these two magnificent Italian cities, I highly recommend traveling with Italo for a stress-free and comfortable journey.
