How do I find cheap train tickets from Milan to Turin?

If you’re planning a trip to Europe soon, our Trainline team of experts have put together some tips to help you find cheap tickets. Booking on the day in Europe is usually more expensive and costs can vary depending on the time of day, route or travel class.

    1. Book in advance

The price of train tickets from Milan to Turin starts at $10.81§ one-way for a Standard Class ticket if you book in advance. Most train companies across Europe release their tickets around three to six months ahead of time, so if you know the dates you want to travel, you may be able to find cheaper tickets.

    2. Be flexible with your travel times

If you can, consider traveling outside of 'peak hours' (generally between 06:00 - 10:00 and 15:00 - 19:00 on weekdays) as lots of trains companies increase their ticket prices during these commuter times.

    3. Buy a rail pass

If you're visiting multiple locations on your trip, buying a rail pass can be cheaper than buying individual tickets. We're official retailers of Eurail Passes that are valid for travel in one country or multiple countries across Europe.

    4. Choose a slower or connecting train

On some busier routes, you might have the option to take a slower or connecting train. It may take longer than some high-speed or direct services, but if you have some extra time on your hands, you might find a cheaper fare.

    5. Look out for train ticket sales and deals

Many train companies in Europe will often run sales and offers on tickets throughout the year, so keep an eye out!

What Trenitalia offers are there from Milan to Turin?

For specific information about how to get your hands on cheap tickets, check out our European train tickets hub.

§Some train companies may not offer any Advance ticket types or cheaper deals for early bookings. This is dependent on the individual train operating company you travel with.

Travel at 300 km/h from Milan to Turin and enjoy the view of the Alps

For this journey, I took the brand new Frecciarossa 1000 bound for Torino Porta Nuova. As my train was departing at 09:07, I got to Milan central station at 08:40.

Between 08:00 and 10:00 there are 9 trains which travel between Milan and Turin – including Frecciarossa, Italo and regional trains. It's a very popular route!

    Departing from Milano Centrale

The platform number for my train appeared on the board just seven minutes before I was scheduled to depart, and at Milano Centrale you have to get through a few boarding gates to reach the platforms. There was a small queue but I managed to board the train with a few minutes to spare. I'd suggest heading straight for the boarding gates as soon as you know your platform number – as I did – to avoid missing your train!

    Frecciarossa 1000

Frecciarossa 1000 is such a cool train. Seats are comfortable and there’s plenty of legroom in Standard Class. The onboard WiFi works really well – you can access the Frecce portal to watch movies and TV shows as well as read the national newspapers and magazines. Make sure you sit on the right-hand side of the train if you want to make the most of the breath-taking view of the Alps surrounding Turin.

    Arriving in Turin

We arrived at Torino Porta Susa, which is right before the more central Torino Porta Nuova, after 40 minutes – hitting a top speed of 297 km/h along the way. The train station is quite modern, resembling arm because of its long and slim shape. There are many bars and restaurants, Trenitalia’s and Italo’s lounges, the underground, car hire services and a taxi rank on Corso Bolzano. Torino Porta Susa station is mainly used by commuters – it’s close to many companies such as Banca Intesa San Paolo and Rai, the national public broadcasting company of Italy.

If you need power sockets or WiFi, go to Bread House, a bar that is right opposite the station on Corso Inghilterra. The best way to get to the city centre is on the underground.

    The journey

I loved travelling on the Frecciarossa 1000 – it’s super comfortable and the service is excellent!  There’s plenty of legroom and space for luggage even in the Standard Class and the armchairs are quite comfortable. Turin is the perfect destination for a day trip from Milan, it’s such a short journey and you can easily get cheap train tickets thanks to the many deals and discounts that are available. I definitely recommend it!
