Netflix’s Murder Mystery movie straddles the line between the outrageous comedy one would expect from an Adam Sandler murder mystery flick and the serious, head-scratching plot typical of a murder mystery film that Jennifer Aniston would sign on for.

And the Murder Mystery filming locations? Equally impressive.

Not only can you get to many of the European Murder Mystery filming locations by train, but doing so creates an unforgettable trip to Europe regardless of how many times you’ve watched the Netflix films.

Taking the mystery out of Murder Mystery filming locations

What is Murder Mystery on Netflix about?

Murder Mystery on Netflix is about a police officer, Nick Spitz (played by Adam Sandler), and well-read wife, Audrey (played by Jennifer Aniston), taking an overdue vacation to Europe. They meet a billionaire by chance and are invited onto his yacht — where he is soon found murdered.

No spoilers here: Murder Mystery 2 follows a similar premise. Nick and Audrey once more find themselves at the center of a mystery, this time trying to deduce who kidnapped their wealthy friend, Vikram "The Maharajah" Govindan.

Will there be a Murder Mystery 3 on Netflix?

Netflix has yet to announce a Murder Mystery 3, but with the success of the first two films, we won’t be surprised if Nick and Audrey Spitz land themselves at the center of another hilarious whodunit.

Was Murder Mystery filmed in Europe?

Yes, both Murder Mystery on Netflix and its sequel, Murder Mystery 2, were filmed in Europe. In addition to Europe, Murder Mystery’s filming locations included the United States and Canada, while the second film was also filmed in the US.

Where was Murder Mystery filmed?

The first Netflix Murder Mystery movie was filmed in Italy (including the Italian Riviera), Montreal in Canada, and Los Angeles in the US. The Netflix sequel was shot primarily in Hawaii and in Paris, France.

Where in Italy was Murder Mystery filmed?

We rarely say this about movies — what with their liberal use of CGI and set-swapping trickery — but Murder Mystery is a fantastic primer for anyone traveling to Northern Italy.

Murder Mystery was filmed in Milan, including at the beloved Milano Centrale train station and Milan Malpensa Airport, which has a direct train connection to the city center. Italian Murder Mystery filming locations also included Lake Como and the Italian Riviera.

Was Murder Mystery 2 filmed on the Eiffel Tower?

The biggest mystery in Murder Mystery 2: how in the world did production sneak a scene in on top of the real Eiffel Tower? Although set pieces were used for the majority of the film’s climax, Adam Sandler and a stunt double for Jennifer Aniston legitimately swung from ropes off of the Eiffel Tower.

European Murder Mystery filming locations

The first Murder Mystery film on Netflix grants us a dazzling detour through Italy worthy of its own vacation.

Milan Malpensa Airport

Closest station: Malpensa Aeroporto

Milan’s international airport sets the stage for the Spitzes’ arrival into Europe, which is fitting: it’s a popular landing spot for US travelers and the Malpensa Express provides a direct train from the airport to Milan Centrale in the city center.

Milano Centrale

Closest station: Milano Centrale

One of the most beautiful train stations in Europe, the Spitzes waltz into Milan’s main train station to board the legendary Orient Express. Though this famous train service no longer exists, you can travel on the luxurious Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, which is inspired by the original.

Como

Closest station: Como San Giovanni or Como Nord Lago

The marketplace scenes in Lake Como were set in the real lakeside town of Como, specifically in the Piazza Medaglie d’Oro and on the street Via Serafino Balestra, 3.

Cernobbio

Closest station: Como San Giovanni or Como Nord Lago

If the magnificent mansion in Murder Mystery looked familiar, you’ll recognize Cernobbio’s Villa Erba from other films like Ocean’s Twelve.

Santa Margherita Ligure

Closest station: S.Margherita Ligure

For the seaside scenes shot from billionaire Charles Cavendish’s yacht, the production crew looked to the Italian Riviera town of Santa Margherita Ligure. One of the best beaches in Italy, Spiaggia Baia del Silenzio, gets its flowers in the film, too.

“Monaco”

Closest station: Milano Centrale

Sorry racing fans; while some footage of the Monaco Grand Prix was used for the movie, the Murder Mystery filming locations for Monaco were a mix of greenscreen work in Montreal and the real-life streets of Milan. The stand-in for the famed Monte Carlo hotel, for instance, was actually Hotel Principe di Savoia, located only steps away from Milano Centrale train station.

But if you insist on seeing the iconic Monaco Grand Prix raceway, you can take a 4h 36m train from Milan Central station to Monaco–Monte Carlo station with a quick change in Ventimiglia.

European Murder Mystery 2 filming locations

As much as we wish the islands of Spain, France, or Italy were stand-ins for Hawaii, there are few places in Europe that come close to mimicking The Aloha State. Thankfully, there’s no place like Paris, which hosts one of the coolest Murder Mystery filming locations.

Eiffel Tower

Closest station: Champ de Mars – Tour Eiffel

No spoilers here: the climax of Murder Mystery 2 uses The Iron Lady as a filming location.

Arc de Triomphe

Closest station: Charles de Gaulle – Étoile

It’s not surprising that production included the Arc de Triomphe as a set piece, a meeting point between the Spitzes and the kidnappers.

Palais Garnier

Closest station: Opéra

The Spitzes meet up with Inspector Delacroix at the Palais Garnier opera house, a gorgeous 19th-century building that’s as impressive as the performances on its stage.

“Café Le Beau”

Closest station: Gare d'Austerlitz

Café Le Beau isn’t a real cafe, which is probably for the best considering its state at the end of the film. The café was built on the streets of the 13th arrondissement, but if you’re looking for a real iconic Paris café, head to Le Relais de Venise - son entrecôte near the Arc de Triomphe, and a mere 3-minute walk from Porte Maillot Métro station.

Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte

Closest station: Melun

We’re cheating a little here: Countess Sekou’s mansion is southeast of Paris on the outskirts of Melun, but it’s still worth the train ride to marvel at the 17th-century opulence.
