The strength of a United States passport definitely spoils American travelers.

But that’s about to change ever so slightly in Europe.

Starting mid-2025, American nationals will need to apply for travel authorization through the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) before arriving in Europe. This ETIAS authorization will be necessary to enter 30 European countries.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new documentation required for Americans to visit Europe.

What is ETIAS? And will it ruin my vacation?

The European Travel Information and Authorization System, or ETIAS, is a travel authorization that US citizens (among other non-European travelers) will need to enter 30 European countries legally. This authorization is tied to your passport, so upon arrival, passport control can see your approved authorization. It’s one small extra step in planning your vacation.

Will ETIAS ruin your vacation? Highly unlikely.

We’ll guide you through the details, but to put your mind at ease, know this: the ETIAS authorization is a simple application process, and most applications are processed within minutes.

Is ETIAS a new visa scheme for Europe?

In simplest terms, ETIAS is not a visa but a travel authorization aimed at better controlling which travelers enter EU borders. The European Union proposed this system years ago, but the implementation was delayed. The EU wants to strengthen its borders from potential threats, especially of the terror variety.

When will these ETIAS changes take place?

ETIAS is set to launch in 2025. At least, that’s what the latest news is. ETIAS was initially supposed to launch in 2020. Then 2022. Then 2023 and 2024. ETIAS might get pushed back again or it could get the green light. Either way, it’s important to stay updated on ETIAS developments to ensure you meet entry requirements for each country.

Why was ETIAS delayed again to 2025?

ETIAS was postponed to 2025 for several reasons. One major factor is the European Entry/Exit System (EES), which needs to be operational before ETIAS can launch. Another is ensuring compliance with EU General Data Protection Regulations. Additionally, the busy European summer sports calendar in 2024 led to a delay to avoid overwhelming the system with additional travelers.

How does this change travel for US citizens?

Currently, US citizens can travel to Schengen Zone countries without a visa, as long as they meet passport and customs requirements. Once ETIAS goes live, an additional travel authorization will be required before arrival.

Need to know: Non-EU travelers may still need to apply for a Schengen visa depending on their nationality and travel plans. We explain the differences between the Schengen visa and the ETIAS program in more detail in our guide to the Schengen visa for non-EU travelers.

Which European countries require ETIAS?

Headed to Europe in 2025? ETIAS will impact visa-exempt travelers entering the following 30 European countries:

AustriaGermanyNetherlands
BelgiumGreeceNorway
BulgariaHungary Poland
CroatiaIcelandPortugal
CyprusItalyRomania
Czech RepublicLatviaSlovakia
DenmarkLiechtensteinSlovenia
Estonia Lithuania Spain
Finland Luxembourg Sweden
France MaltaSwitzerland

Does my ETIAS authorization get me into the UK?

No, ETIAS is only valid for the countries listed above. England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland have their own entry requirements for US travelers.

And to clear up any confusion: The Republic of Ireland (cities including Dublin, Cork, and Limerick) is not part of the United Kingdom, Great Britain, or the Schengen Zone, though it is a member of the European Union and will not require ETIAS authorization. However, please note that Northern Ireland (cities including Belfast, Derry, and Bangor) is a part of the United Kingdom.

How do travelers apply for ETIAS?

You’ll need to fill out the ETIAS application on the website or via the mobile app (once ETIAS has launched) before departing for Europe — ideally weeks in advance, not while you're waiting to board at your gate.

What do I need to apply for ETIAS?

Applying for ETIAS will serve as a great reminder to check your passport's expiration date, as you’ll need a valid passport that is less than 10 years old and does not expire within three months of your planned travel. A biometric passport is required.

Do I need to apply for ETIAS every time I travel?

No, most travelers won’t need to reapply each time. An approved ETIAS is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first.

Important exception: If your passport hasn't expired, but you've obtained a new one (for instance, if you legally changed your name due to marriage), you’ll need to reapply for ETIAS because the original ETIAS authorization is tied to the passport you used when you first applied.

How much will ETIAS cost?

The ETIAS application fee is €7 (about $8), though some travelers may be exempt.

Keep in mind: Paying the fee and holding a processed application does not guarantee admittance into any country. Final entry decisions are always made by border control authorities at the time of your arrival.

How long will the ETIAS authorization process take?

The process is super quick, with most applications getting processed in a matter of minutes. But just as train strikes can disrupt your trip, this application process can, too. Some applications may take up to 30 days if additional information or an interview is required.

How early can you apply for ETIAS?

Once operational, you can apply for ETIAS as soon as you start booking your travel. One thing to remember: the authorization clock starts ticking upon approval, so plan accordingly.

Is it possible to apply without confirmed travel plans?

Yes, you can apply for ETIAS without confirmed travel plans by listing an intended country of visit on your application.

Once your application is confirmed, you can change your plans and you’ll still be authorized to travel within the 30 ETIAS countries. This flexibility allows you to adjust your itinerary as needed without the need for reapplying.

Can you apply for ETIAS on behalf of someone else?

Yes, you can apply for another person with their authorization, which involves signing a declaration of representation, which will be available on the ETIAS website.

Do Americans need a visa for Europe in 2024?

No, American citizens can travel to Schengen Zone countries without a visa until mid-2025, when ETIAS is expected to be implemented. That makes right now the perfect time to squeeze in a trip to Europe before you need to add another to-do to your travel list.
