You can travel between these cities in less than two hours on board Renfe trains.

    Renfe, Avant and Media Distancia trains from Seville to Málaga

    Renfe is the national train operator in Spain. It operates trains on the longest high-speed railway network in Europe, and the second-longest in the world. The country's major cities are linked up by the high-speed AVE and Avlo trains, while other long-distance routes are served by Altaria, Talgo, Alvia and Euromed trains. Renfe also operates cross-border services into neighbouring Portugal and France. Depending on which service you are travelling on, you'll usually find two classes on Renfe trains - Estándard (Standard Class) and Confort (First Class). Fare types range from the cheapest (but least flexible) Básico fare, to the more flexible Elige fares, to the Premium fare for seats in Confort carriages.

    Able to reach speeds of at 155 mph (250 km/h), Avant trains operate short and medium distance high-speed services. These trains are intended to cover journeys within the same autonomous community or in two neighbouring communities. For this reason, trains generally don’t offer catering services and travel less than 125 miles (200 km). They have two types of comfort classes – Turista (Second Class) and Preferente (First Class).

    Renfe's Media Distancia are regional trains operated by CAF locomotives that run on medium-distance routes not covered by Avant high-speed trains. Most Media Distancia trains have one class. However, there are some that will have Turista (Second Class) and Preferente (First Class). These trains also have spaces for bicycles, and all seats are equipped with power sockets and reading lights.

If the dimensions exceed 180 cm, it will be considered special luggage and must travel with the pedals removed, the handlebars turned 90 degrees and dimensions less than 120 x 90 x 40 cm (47.2 x 35.4 x 15.7 inches).

      Your pet can accompany you as long as it weighs less than 10 kg (22 pounds), travels with a pet ticket, doesn’t occupy a seat and is inside a carrier with max dimensions 60 x 35 x 35 cm (23 x 13 x 13 inches).       How do I find cheap train tickets from Seville to Málaga?

      If you’re planning a trip to Europe soon, our Trainline team of experts have put together some tips to help you find cheap tickets. Booking on the day in Europe is usually more expensive and costs can vary depending on the time of day, route or travel class.

      1. Book in advance

      The price of train tickets from Seville to Málaga starts at $16.02§ one-way for a Standard Class ticket if you book in advance. Most train companies across Europe release their tickets around three to six months ahead of time, so if you know the dates you want to travel, you may be able to find cheaper tickets.

      2. Be flexible with your travel times

      If you can, consider traveling outside of 'peak hours' (generally between 06:00 - 10:00 and 15:00 - 19:00 on weekdays) as lots of trains companies increase their ticket prices during these commuter times.

      3. Buy a rail pass

      If you're visiting multiple locations on your trip, buying a rail pass can be cheaper than buying individual tickets. We're official retailers of Eurail Passes that are valid for travel in one country or multiple countries across Europe.

      4. Choose a slower or connecting train

      On some busier routes, you might have the option to take a slower or connecting train. It may take longer than some high-speed or direct services, but if you have some extra time on your hands, you might find a cheaper fare.

      5. Look out for train ticket sales and deals

      Many train companies in Europe will often run sales and offers on tickets throughout the year, so keep an eye out!

      Travel from Seville to Malaga at a speed of 250 km/h

      Renfe’s Avant trains cover the Seville to Malaga route. Reaching speeds of 250 km/h with a journey time of 1h 50m, these trains only have one class (Turista) and feature vending machines with food and drinks instead of a dining carriage.

      Leaving from Jerez de la Frontera, I reached Sevilla-Santa Justa train station at 17:25. After getting off the train, I quickly found an information screen which showed that the Avant train bound for Málaga-María Zambrano was departing from platform 6. All the information at the station was provided in both Spanish and English. Once at the platform, I had to go through security checks.

      Quiet carriages

      Right after boarding the train, Renfe’s staff encouraged us not to make phone calls in the quiet carriage but rather use the space between the carriages to do so.

      There are two types of carriage on Avant trains – Turista and Turista Plus. Seats are laid out so that you can either sit alone or with a group, depending on your preference. The seats in the Turista Plus carriage are made of leather, are a bit wider than the normal ones and don’t have power sockets, unlike the AVE, Media Distancia (middle distance) and Alvia trains. They all had reclining tables and footrests.

      Avant trains offer basic onboard services, such as air-conditioning, information screens and music channels. The Avant train serving the route to Malaga doesn’t have WiFi.

      After stopping at Cordoba, Puente Genil-Herrera and Antequera-Santa Ana train stations, I arrived at Malaga María-Zambrano train station at 19:45, 5 minutes before the expected time. The experience was thoroughly enjoyable and an efficient way to extend my holiday in the south of Spain.
