Making his directorial debut, Dan Levy’s Good Grief is a Netflix film released in late 2023.

And it’s a sad one, folks. So, don’t expect Levy to constantly break out the hilarious shenanigans of David from Schitt’s Creek

Here’s everything you need to know about this somber Netflix release and where you can find its filming locations across Europe.

What to know before Good Grief gives you a good cry

Keep the tissues close by.

How to watch Good Grief?

Good Grief is a Netflix original movie. Though it had a very small release prior to its Netflix debut, it was not released in theaters en masse and is not available on any other streaming service that lacks a “tudum” intro.

Who is in Good Grief?

Good Grief was written, directed, and stars Dan Levy, a.k.a. David of Schitt’s Creek fame. The supporting cast for Good Grief includes Ruth Negga (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Preacher), Himesh Patel (Yesterday, Tenet), and Luke Evans (Beauty and the Beast, Netflix’s Murder Mystery)

What has Dan Levy directed?

Good Grief marks Dan Levy’s directorial debut in film. Levy directed four episodes of Schitt’s Creek (he co-created the entire series, BTW). Levy has no other directorial credits to his name thus far, but we won’t be surprised if that changes in a few years.

What is Good Grief about?

Good Grief follows an artist in London named Marc (played by Levy) who is grieving the sudden loss of his husband, Oliver (played by Evans). When Marc discovers that Oliver had a secret apartment in Paris, he ventures across the channel with his best friends, Sophie and Thomas (played by Negga and Patel, respectively).

Is Good Grief based on a true story?

No, Good Grief isn’t based on a true story, nor is it based on a book. However, Levy does weave elements of his own life into the script, specifically his experiences with grief, love, and loss.

Where is the movie Good Grief set?

Good Grief is set between London and Paris. Marc, Levy’s character, lives in the UK capital. After his husband dies, he takes his friends Sophie and Thomas to Paris

Where was Good Grief filmed?

Where is Good Grief set in London?

While Good Grief did film on location in London, there aren’t many scenes that you can (or would want to) recreate from the beginning of the movie. Many of the establishing shots feature classic locations, making a Good Grief filming locations tour akin to a regular London sightseeing tour.

A few of the places we spotted in the film and their nearby train/tube stations are:

  • Big Ben: Westminster Underground station
  • The Shard: London Bridge train station and Underground station
  • One Blackfriars: Blackfriars train station and Underground station
  • London Eye: Waterloo train station and Underground station
  • The British Museum: Tottenham Court Road and Holborn Underground stations

Where is Good Grief set in Paris?

Like London, many of the Paris Good Grief filming locations were establishing shots, though the Paris Ferris Wheel, Au Pied de Cochon restaurant, and Musée de l'Orangerie were handpicked for Good Grief and were in the script from day one. Here are the closest train stations or métro stations in Paris near these Good Grief filming locations:

  • Eiffel Tower: Champ de Mars–Tour Eiffel train station and Bir-Hakeim métro station
  • Arc de Triomphe: Charles de Gaulle–Étoile métro station
  • Musée de l'Orangerie: Concorde métro station
  • Roue de Paris Ferris Wheel: Tuileries métro station
  • Au Pied de Cochon: Châtelet–Les Halles train station and Les Halles métro station
  • Le Maris (neighborhood): Saint-Paul (Le Marais) métro station
  • Montmartre (neighborhood): Abbesses métro station

Good Grief doesn’t hold the keys to these filming locations, either. You can see many sights of the City of Light in other LGBTQ+ movies filmed in Paris, like:
