Cobbled streets, fairytale architecture and a setting on the Aure river (there’s even a water wheel!) make Bayeux a positively charming place to pay a visit to when in France. Set in the region of Normandy, there’s plenty of history both ancient and modern to explore, as well as delicious food. Seafood is plentiful here, and a trip to the coast it comes from will let you retrace the steps of the D-day landings - check out our guide to taking the train to visit Normandy's D-Day beaches.
The 68-metre long Bayeux Tapestry takes you further back in time, being 900 years old. As quaint as Bayeux may be, it still packs in the grandeur, just head to the Notre-Dame Cathedral of Bayeux and marvel at the truly stunning architecture. Of course, if looking upon this stunning landmark makes you yearn to see its famous Parisian counterpart, that’s easily remedied!
The train to Paris takes just over 2 hours, and you’ll be travelling in style thanks to Intercités trains from SNCF. Modern, spacious and comfortable, choose to travel in First or Second Class and arrive in Paris ready to explore. Notre Dame can perfectly bridge your journey, or go underground and explore the spooky catacombs. Or go less macabre and more macarons at one of the city’s upscale bakeries. Fabulous France awaits! SNCF is the national train operator of France. It operates all domestic trains and routes across France, as well as international services to Spain and Germany. There are three different types of domestic trains that operate under the SNCF banner – TGV (high-speed, full-service trains that connect the major cities in France), Intercités (usually a more frequent stopping service, but with all the amenities), and TER (regional train services with basic onboard facilities).
