Netflix’s Ripley’s filming locations have us nearly convinced to abandon our lives in the States and con our way into a glamorous Italian life.

Here’s what to know about the latest Netflix series Ripley that everyone is bingeing, including where you can find its filming locations across Italy.

What is Netflix’s Ripley about?

Netflix’s Ripley follows Tom Ripley, a petty criminal in 1960’s New York City, who finds himself immersed in a world of riches and lies when he’s hired to bring a wealthy man’s son home from Europe. Ripley begins to covet the son’s life, leading to some dark scheming.

Where was Ripley filmed in Italy?

Ripley was filmed in a variety of Italian cities. Rome, Venice, Capri, Palermo, Naples, and Atrani are all featured in the series. Positano and Paliano are settings in the series but production crews staged other areas of Italy as stand-ins instead. Here are a few of our favorite spots you’ll see in the show.

Venice

Main station: Venezia Santa Lucia

We begin where the series ends: Venice. Visit Tom Ripley’s palazzo at Palazzo Contarini Polignac near the Gallerie dell’Accademia. You’ll catch other famous Venetian landmarks from scene to scene, including St Mark’s Square and Doge’s Palace.

Who could tire of seeing the beauty of Venice? Moviegoers sure don’t; that’s why you can also catch Venice in A Haunting in Venice, Book Club: The Next Chapter, Lift, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part 1, and Casino Royale.

Rome

Main station: Roma Termini

Rome is so full of amazing backdrops indoors and outside that countless shows and movies were filmed in the Eternal City, from The Lizzie McGuire Movie to Eat, Pray Love. Ripley was filmed in a handful of Rome’s wondrous locales including the Spanish Steps, Palazzo dei Congressi, Park of the Aqueducts, and the Galleria Borghese.

If you’re looking for Hotel Excelsior, though, it’s an amalgamation of different filming locations, including Hotel Hassler and Grand Hotel Plaza in Rome. We’ve got your covered if you’re looking for the best hotels near the Spanish Steps or a new neighborhood to explore.

Naples

Main station: Napoli Centrale

Unfortunately, the Old Garibaldi Station shown in Ripley is a ruse: it was torn down ages ago and replaced by Napoli Piazza Garibaldi that currently welcomes train riders. Naples played a unique role in Ripley, as it mainly acted as a stand-in for other locations in Italy.

For example, the Santa Maria la Nova church in Naples portrayed a church in Rome and Palazzo Sanfelice was also Tom Ripley’s “Palermo” hotel. The Santa Maria La Nova and Pio Monte della Misericordia were also shown.

Palermo

Main station: Palermo Centrale

The Oratory of St. Lawrence and Santuario di Santa Rosalia are two of the *real* filming locations for Ripley in Palermo. If you’re one to binge a show and fly all the way to Europe to see its filming locations, then hop a train from any of the cities above to Sicily and include these spots from The White Lotus on your itinerary.

Atrani

Main station: Sorrento or Vietri sul Mare-Amalfi

Ah, Atrani, you’re in for quite the summer tourist rush. This Amalfi Coast town is as picturesque as it looks in Ripley. The town where Marge and Dickie live, Atrani, is small — so it’s no surprise that Atrani Beach is one of the few proper set pieces actually filmed in the town. Places like Dickie’s villa, though? That’s actually Villa Torricella in Capri.

P.S. You won’t find the Hotel Miramare in Atrani because someone’s private home was used as the filming location. However, there is a real Hotel Miramare nearby in Positano, as well as these other fantastic hotels on the Amalfi Coast

Who is in the Ripley cast?

Netflix’s Ripley stars Andrew Scott (Fleabag), Dakota Fanning (The Equalizer 3), Johnny Flynn, Margherita Buy, Eliot Summer (No Time to Die), and Maurizio Lombardi.

When was Ripley filmed?

Netflix’s Ripley was filmed years ago, despite its only recent 2024 release. Andrew Scott was cast way back in 2019 and filming was bumped from 2020 to 2021. Ripley was in post-production in 2023 and found its way onto our screens in April 2024.

Was Tom Ripley in love with Dickie?

We’re going to tread lightly to avoid spoilers here, so we’ll just say that it certainly seems that Tom Ripley was infatuated with aspects of Dickie — namely, his possessions and perspective on life. Is that true love? William Shakespeare said love is not love which alters when it alteration finds — and oh boy, things did get altered in Ripley, that’s for sure.

Is Netflix’s Ripley based on a book?

Yes, Netflix’s Ripley is based on the book The Talented Mr Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. The novel was previously adapted into the 1999 film The Talented Mr Ripley which starred Matt Damon (Saving Private Ryan), Gwyneth Paltrow (The Royal Tenenbaums), Jude Law (The Holiday), Cate Blanchett, and Philip Seymour Hoffman (Mission: Impossible III).

🚂 Trainline Trivia: The Talented Mr Ripley has jumped from page to screen multiple times. Purple Noon was the first adaptation in 1960, followed by The American Friend in 1977. After Matt Damon’s film, John Malkovich took a turn as Ripley in Ripley’s Game (2002) before Ripley Under Ground (2005) came out with Barry Pepper in the titular role.

What other movies are filmed in Atrani, Italy?

The Amalfi Coast has its SAG card thanks to its role in films like Under the Tuscan Sun and A Good Woman. The Equalizer 3 was filmed across the Amalfi Coast, including in Atrani, as well.
