Few literary characters have cast a shadow as long as Robin Hood. This famous thief, whose origins remain unknown, has captivated British and international audiences since at least the 14th century. His mission? To steal from the rich and give to the poor. 

For fans, or even those just vaguely aware of his existence, Nottingham is synonymous with Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men. And the British city embraces this legacy.

Nottingham, England: Robin Hood-inspired spots 

Nottingham Castle 

Perched atop a hill in the city’s center, Nottingham Castle has played a significant role in the legends of Robin Hood. Today it’s a museum and art gallery, a place where visitors can expect a classy blend of historical artifacts and contemporary art. Don’t forget you can visit the caves underneath the castle where Robin Hood was believed to be imprisoned. The Robin Hood statue nearby commemorates this legendary figure. 

Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem 

Once you’re done with your castle tour, be sure to check out Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, one of the oldest pubs in England, which is built into the rock beneath the castle. Legend has it that Robin Hood and his Merry Men would frequent this pub for a refreshment after a bit of thievery. Enjoy a pint while soaking in the historical ambiance and folklore. 

National Justice Museum 

The National Justice Museum, both somber and informative, offers visitors a look at the old-timey criminal justice system that Robin Hood fought against. The museum’s interactive exhibits and guided tours provide insight into the outlaw’s struggle for justice and fairness. 

St. Mary’s Church, Nottingham 

St. Mary’s Church, located in Nottingham city center, plays a major role in one of the oldest tales, Robin Hood and the Monk. In this ballad, the antihero is ambushed outside the church after a mass, leading to an epic battle on its steps. While your visit to St. Mary’s Church won’t be as bloody or adventurous, it’ll certainly be worthwhile. Soak in the rich interiors and décor, which are proud reflections of Nottingham’s enduring heritage. 

St. Nicholas Church, Nottingham 

Sensing a theme here? Many of Robin Hood’s tales feature houses of worship, and St. Nicholas Church in Nottingham is no exception. With a history that traces back to the 11th or 12th century, this church was a constant in Robin Hood stories as a sanctuary where he prayed and sought refuge. Today the building is beautifully preserved and still in use. 

Will Scarlet’s Grave 

Will Scarlet’s Grave is in Blidworth, on the outskirts of Nottingham, within the graveyard of the Church of St. Mary of the Purification. It houses an unmarked grave that may not catch the eye of the casual observer, but fans of Robin Hood’s lore will know it as the grave of Will Scarlet, one of Robin Hood’s Merry Men.

This tour offers an insightful look at both the literary character and historic British town life. It includes walks through cobbled streets and visits to ancient pubs as you retrace Robin Hood’s steps.

What forest does Robin Hood live in? 

An obvious stop for Robin Hood enthusiasts is the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve.  This ancient woodland is where Robin Hood is said to have lived and roamed. Besides its scenic beauty, it features the majestic Major Oak, a centuries-old tree believed to have been Robin Hood’s hideout. 

Travelers should note that Sherwood Forest is not located within Nottingham itself but closer to Mansfield, approximately an hour’s drive north. 

More than Robin Hood: a must-see place in Nottingham, England 

Wollaton Hall, Gardens and Deer Park 

Wollaton Hall, an exquisite Elizabethan mansion, might not have a direct link to Robin Hood, but it’s still an essential leg of any visit to Nottingham. The manor itself has been used as a film set before, specifically in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, and it’s a classy spot to spend an afternoon, with incredible architecture and grounds. Definitely one for the Instagram crowd.
