Italo Smart is the equivalent of Economy Class, while Italo Prima is the train company’s version of Premium Economy. There’s also Club Executive Class, which is Italo’s Business Class offering.
Smart Class is aimed at travelers on a budget. There’s a baggage limit (nothing larger than 75 x 53 x 30 cm / 29.5 x 20.8 x 11.8 inches), and there are more seats in each car (2 + 2 formation).
On the other hand, Prima has fewer seats (2 + 1 formation), so there’s more legroom at your seat. There are also no restrictions on baggage, and a few extra perks like a welcome snack and Fast Track boarding (where available).

Yes, it’s an upgrade from Smart (Economy), but that doesn’t mean it has to cost you loads extra. When booking in advance, you may find that Prima Class seats are only a little more expensive than Smart (or sometimes even cheaper) - so it may only be a small price to pay for an upgrade!
