A list of opinions French and Italian business travellers hold of train travel

French and Italian travellers both see trains in eight positive lights – and the former has a generally more positive view of rail travel.

The survey for Trainline Business quizzed hundreds of employees in France and Italy with responsibility for their firm’s business travel.

They agreed that trains are:

  • efficient
  • environmentally-friendly
  • comfortable
  • fast
  • modern
  • good value for money
  • reliable
  • affordable

The survey also found French travellers were more than twice as likely as Italians to see trains as fast and modern.

13% of Italians said they thought trains were slow, compared to just 5% in France and 16% of Italians felt they were outdated compared to 7% in France.

All those surveyed agreed on another thing – they thought trains should be more punctual.

Just 35% agreed that trains were a punctual way to travel, while 43% disagreed. Italian workers had a slightly more negative feeling about the punctuality of trains, with 45% thinking they’re often delayed compared to 40% in France.

Encouragingly, while reliability is less strong, but the majority said that rail is reliable enough for business travel.

About the survey:

Carried out by Savanta in April and May 2022. It asked 512 decision makers with responsibility over managing business travel split across respondents from France (255) and Italy (257). Respondents in each market were split evenly by business size.
