Trains to Waterloo

London Waterloo is the UK's busiest railway station, with just under 100 million passengers passing through it every year. Just minutes from the South Bank, it's at the heart of one of London's culture and tourism hotspots – look out for views of the London Eye and Big Ben as you arrive – as well as being the main terminus for commuter services from the south and southwest of the city, and an Underground hub with connections to the Northern, Jubilee, Bakerloo and Waterloo & City lines. The original Waterloo opened in 1848. A major rebuilding project was undertaken between 1899 and 1922, expanding the station to 21 platforms and adding a huge concourse over 800 feet long. Today's station only has 19 platforms, but retains the dramatic main entrance, known as the Victory Arch. It's a memorial to workers of the then London and South Western Railway Company who lost their lives during both world wars.

Station details & facilities

Waterloo's layout is simple - its 19 platforms extend from the concourse, with 19 closest to the main entrance and 1 furthest away. At busy times, the best way to view the departure boards is to take the escalator or lift to the mezzanine level, which looks out over the concourse and has access to a variety of shops, cafes and bars. Access to the Underground is via escalators next to platform 19 and to the rear of the concourse.
