The town of Swindon has long been linked to rail travel, located as it is on the main line between Bristol and London. This was Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Great Western Railway, and in 1841 Swindon became the location for the line's repair and maintenance yards. Initially there was no station building, and passengers used a local pub to buy their tickets. Today's station was constructed in the 1970s, and Swindon continues to serve as a major hub for trains to London, Wales and the southwest. The station is to the north of the town centre, where Swindon's railway and engineering history is reflected in the name of The Brunel shopping centre. Nearby attractions include The Museum of Computing, the Wyvern Theatre and the relaxed spaces of Queen's Park. A ten-minute walk will bring you to the STEAM Museum, which tells the story of the Great Western Railway.
