St Johns railway station sits in the South East London borough of Lewisham some 5 miles from the city. It was opened in the second half of the 20 th century by South Eastern Railway as a commuting station. Between the late ’40 and early ‘90s, it was nationalised by British Railways and in the ‘70s, most of the original station structures were destroyed in a fire. Today, the station and the trains that pass through on the South Eastern Main Line are managed by Southeastern. The two-platform station might look small, but it serves more than 730,000 every year.
There is a ticket office opened between Mondays and Fridays, and self-service machines for use outside the office’s opening hours. There are a staggering nine trains an hour straight to London Bridge in 7 minutes throughout the day. When you step off at St Johns, you could go walking through the pretty Brookmill Park, pay your respects at the War Memorial or, if you come on a Saturday, pick up some artisanal products as the weekly farmers’ market.
