Trains to Northampton arrive at a £20 million modern station that is a radical departure from the shed-like structure of the 1960s. The glass and steel building is full of light and colour, and occupies the former site of Northampton Castle – the town's rail fortunes have certainly changed since the 19th century when the pioneers of the London to Birmingham Railway judged it an unsuitable place for a station due to its steep gradients.

The station is half a mile west of the town centre, and Northampton's 'other' cathedral – Franklin's Gardens, home of hugely successful rugby team The Saints – is approximately 20 minutes' walk away. The best way to explore this medieval town is on foot, strolling past buildings from every age of British history. Look out for the Holy Sepulchre (1100), All Saints' Church (1680) and the Guildhall (1864). And going pedestrian couldn't be more appropriate, as in the 18th century Northampton was the shoe capital of the UK.
