Glasgow Central was opened by the Caledonian Railway in 1879, and completely rebuilt between 1901 and 1905. The changes extended the Central Hotel that still fronts the station, and added a number of famous architectural features, including the glass-walled bridge that became a popular meeting point for visiting Highlanders – earning it the nickname the 'Hielanman's Umbrella'. Rail fans can learn more about this historic station on daily guided tours, which include underground vaults and a disused Victorian platform. Glasgow Central's architecture reflects the prosperity brought by the Industrial Revolution, when Glasgow became known as the 'Second City of the British Empire'. That legacy is reflected in the fine Victorian buildings throughout the city, such as the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. And you don't have to go far to see that Glasgow remained a cultural powerhouse into the 20th century and beyond – the exceptional Gallery of Modern Art is just five minutes' walk from Glasgow Central.

Glasgow Central is the busiest station in Scotland, providing numerous links both into the north of the country, as well as long-distance routes into England. It serves as the northern terminus for the Avanti West Coast route, bringing in passengers from Manchester, Birmingham and London. It also acts as the main interchange hub for Scotrail, with 8 different lines on the network calling at Glasgow Central.

Station details & facilities

All three entrances to Glasgow Central - Gordon Street, Union Street and Hope Street - lead passengers into the main concourse. Platforms 1-15 can be accessed direct from the concourse. Platforms 16-17 are on a lower level, and accessible via stairs, escalators and lifts adjacent to platforms 14 and 15. An 'F' or 'R' beside your platform number denotes the 'front' or 'rear' train. The 'front' train is the one furthest from the concourse.
